Older Adults, Creative Expression and Art: Professional Development Workshop

September 24, 2013 – Kerby Centre, Calgary, AB

This workshop was inspired by the April 2012 Creative Aging Symposium as many symposium participants provided feedback that they would like to see a follow up workshop with Artist Jeff Nachtigall. The daylong workshop included keynote and plenary sessions with Jeff, an experiential workshop activity, and a panel moderated by Elaine Danelesko featuring Jade Powers (Mandala Art Centre), Sue Hall (AgeCare), Sharon Moore (Athabasca University) and Jeff Nachtigall. The panel presenters focused on engaging older adults in creative expression. The workshop day was attended by 37 participants and positive feedback was received. The majority of workshop attendees engaged in the activities and had fun doing so.

The workshop also hosted a selection of photographs from the Spirit of Aging Exhibit by Sharon Moore. This Spirit of Aging photographic exhibition (45 photographs) was the featured exhibition at the McMullen Gallery in Edmonton from January – March 2013. Three of the photographs received an award from the International Federation on Aging (IFA) conference held in Prague, Czech Republic, 2012.
